Millennial Voters: Turn Down for What?

This past Saturday, August 16th, I was honored to participate on a distinguished panel commemorating Women's Day and discuss youth voter participation, and I submit an excerpt of my comments on the topic: 




When you look at the evidence, Millennials don't vote as often as older voters. 

Before we wax philosophical, let us simply consider the socioeconomic factors at play: first, young people are mostly single, and staying single longer; they're more transient, they'll move from city to city and even across states. They therefore have had less time to develop roots into their communities and are unmoored from social connections that raise awareness and interest in civic affairs. Many don't register to vote at their new addresses.


Secondly, due to a variety of reasons, young people of this generation are less likely to own a home or any property than previous generations of young people. Homeownership is one of the variables that increases your likelihood to vote, and we count them amongst America's most reliable voting bloc, only dropping off 2% points in voter participation during mid term elections.

Back in April the Institute of Politics at Harvard University released the results of a poll that gathered information on young voters. Only 23% surveyed said they'd definitely vote in 2014. This compared to 38% youth voter participation in 2012. Only a 1/3 said they have trust in political institutions, a historic low.

When we start asking ourselves why young people are abstaining from exercising their constitutional right to the ballot box, also consider another study which points to the interests of millennials. Of those that responded, 2/3 surveyed are interested in celebrity and entertainment news, while 73% said they are NOT interested in government and politics and 66% said they are uninterested in business and finance. As a society we should find these results troubling and ask ourselves why Millennials choose to tune out issues that affect them. 

We also know that Millennials grew up during the recession, during one of the only periods in our nation's history where young people are facing the reality that they may not reach the success of their parents. We are facing crushing student loan debt and the good paying job that was on the horizon of possibilities after graduating from college has practically vanished. 

There is however encouraging data. My generation turned out to vote in record numbers in 2008, with nearly half of youth voters casting a ballot, the second highest youth turnout since 18 year olds earned the right to vote in 1972. Although the results of the election didn't turn out the way I had hoped, I respect the participation of my peers. 

I'm proud to highlight some of the efforts my club, the Miami Young Republicans, are working on to engage young voters in the political process and the community: 

We put our money where our mouth is and award annual scholarships to hard working and talented students.

In May, we awarded scholarships to two FIU students, Alejandro Falgons and Dennis Par, and to Laura Loomer from Barry university. All three of them work and study their way through school, as I know so many of you have and so many of my peers have as well. 

This scholarship program was started because the cost of higher education has skyrocket for our generation.We think it's the responsibility of community organizations, such as the Miami Young Republicans, to help students complete their education and avoid the crushing debt of student loans and this is our contribution. 

In fact I'm proud to share our club won the recognition of the Florida Federation of Young Republicans, two years in a row, for best event for hosting our scholarship program.

In addition we organize grassroots events to inform young voters on issues of particular importance to them. Just a couple of weeks ago, we had a fantastic turnout at our July meeting where we hosted a forum with Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Lyft, and All Aboard Florida to discuss ridesharing, privately funded rail transit, and the the future of transportation in Miami Dade county.

We've heard a lot about brain drain in South Florida, and surveys show that young people want to live, work, and play in walkable communities with transportation options. We are young, we are in tune with the issues of importance to our generation.

We also partner with groups and organizations that reflect the diversity of young voters. One such group is the Miami Log Cabin Republicans, whom we've proudly supported in their efforts to achieve marriage and workplace equality.

Two weeks ago, we were proud to stand next to Miami LCR President Mimi Planas and co-hosted the Right Solutions Summit, which connected voters with grassroots clubs and organizations and with elected representatives and candidates for office, including Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera and State Senator Anitere Flores. 

The Miami Young Republicans also regularly hosts political journalists and scientists to speak and give us their insights as well as our elected officials. We're provided the opportunity for our members and future members to personally meet and interact with their elected representatives.

In an age where 90% millennials are online it's only logical to create digital strategies to engage, inform, communicate and exchange ideas with young voters. Our club's Chairman, Bradley Gerber, helped usher in the club into the 21st century, leading the rebranding as "Miami Young Republicans" and registering and maintaining our new website, logo, and social media handles. One of my goals for the coming year is to start a community garden in elementary and middle schools. The purpose is to teach children what happens when you plant a seed, water it and watch it grow. The lessons learned from investing one's time and efforts to a cause, whatever that may be, is valuable to the future of our nation. There is value to showing children that their efforts are important and their contributions are needed. We need to create more avenues to engage young people BEFORE they come of voting age. Get them involved in leadership roles and in community volunteering projects. By giving young people opportunities to engage, we give them a reason to care.

SOCIAL MEDIA IN 2012 IS LIKE HAVING A BEEPER IN 1995

Being the only girl in the family had it's perks growing up.  This was very true when my parents gifted me a BEEPER!!! It was the Motorola Bravo Plus model; I FLIPPED OUT!!!! I could now easily communicate with my friends whenever I wanted. 

Immediately, I began to learn beeper codes and developed beeper codes with my friends. 

Remember these? 

07734, Hello. 
143, I love you. 
411, Need info. 

In 1994,  pagers, or as we cool kids called them, BEEPERS, were all the rage, with 61 million pagers in use. 

I remember thinking how on earth I ever communicated with my friends BEFORE having a beeper?

Flash forward to the year 2012...

Nearly a sixth of the WORLD'S population, or ONE BILLION people, are ACTIVE users on Facebook, logging on at least one time per month. Now we all fluent in LOL speak and are all like OMG and FTW. 

We share photos, locations, life milestones and now organ donor status. Now I think, how on earth did I ever communicated with my friends before Facebook and other social media platforms? People are meeting and being connected to each other virtually using social media.  

398 million users have been active on Facebook on at least six of the last seven days as of March 2012. If those numbers aren't sexy enough, consider 488 million people accessed Facebook through their mobile phone just last month, you heard me. 

Facebook has facilitated, in a virtual space, 125 BILLION friendship connections as of March 2012. 

There are approxiatmely 3.2 BILLION "likes" and comments generated by users PER DAY during the first quarter of 2012. 

THOSE NUMBERS SHOULD GRAB THE ATTENTION OF ALL BUSINESS OWNERS & MANAGERS, ESPECIALLY SMALL BUSINESSES

See, having a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a Pinterest board, a LinkedIn page, etc. IS like having a beeper in 1995. 

This communications revolution has sped up not only the volume and pace of information that is instantly consumable but ALSO for the first time in the history of humanity, ANYONE can add information, therefore leaving our own permanent marks on the intrawebs, forever leaving notes, photos, stories, conversations and lifetime's worth of history: a legacy.

A LOT of speculation has taken place surrounding the Facebook's landmark IPO last week. Critics say look, the stock lost value in its opening days, that Facebook isn't "cool" anymore. However, the naysayers or resisters should look at the numbers, they speak for themselves. 

I will say it here again: SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT GOING AWAY. 

It is to the advantage of every business, organization and group to build online communities to develop and share content, engage their communities and educate consumers about their brand. Brands who don't use these tools will miss out the opportunity to build DIRECT relationships with consumers. Brands who do build communities will be successful at creating customer loyalty and repeat customers.

MENTORS = SECRET SAUCE TO SUCCESS


When the up and comers start excelling, it’s usually because they applied the adage: work harder than everyone else and pick yourself up when you fail. What is left out of this formula is to seek the advice of those you admire in order to accelerate your growth and development. This is especially true when overcoming obstacles and failures.


MEET WITH A MENTOR


I had the opportunity to chat with someone I look up to this Tuesday morning, Mr. Michael Hernandez. {Follow him on Twitter @hernandezMA5} Mike is a hired gun for the local Democratic Party, also advising political campaigns throughout Latin American and Caribbean.  I was stoked to meet him for coffee and pick his brain about my prospects and ask him for advice on a multitude of issues. He helped me gain a different perspective, assured me that I was on the right track and shared his experiences… So grateful for his feedback!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A MENTOR?

See, I sought Mike out because I knew he would give me an unbiased opinion; he’s been in my shoes and I knew I had plenty to learn from him. It’s so important to seek out mentors who will help answer your questions and unlock those “AH-HA!” moments, to attain higher levels of understanding.

HOW TO SEEK OUT MENTORS

Who do you already know in your network who is successful? Those should be your role models. Invite them for coffee. Get them to tell you their story, their war stories of their successes AND failures.

“Take the attitude of a student, never be too big to ask questions, never know too much to learn something new.”-Og Mandino

The best advice I can offer to those seeking out mentors is to remain humble and never miss the opportunity to ask questions. Opportunities, by nature, are fleeting. Seize every chance, every opening, and every possibility. This is your greatest challenge as a mentee.


BECOME A MENTOR

Do you do something really well? You should make yourself available to those who seek you out and ask about your work. Be authentic and lend a sympathetic ear to their challenges and offer up words that you would have wanted someone to share with you in that moment. Be kind but always honest.

As we grow and develop ourselves, brands and businesses, it is crucial to our survival to be mentors to the next wave of players, lest we lose out to others more willing to teach.

GET OUT THERE AND BRAND YOURSELF!


I am SOO excited to share with you how I am developing my brand! It all started a couple of months ago as I was sitting around, thinking about what I want to do for the rest of my life. I don’t want to be like everyone else, I wanted to take control of my life and decide my future.


In my first post, I will share with you the steps I have taken to launch my brand. Let’s get right to it!

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BUILD YOUR BRAND:

1-   CREATE YOUR BRAND: Develop an online name (aka “handle”) for yourself that is unique and that reflects an aspect of your personality. In the words of Gary Vaynerchuk, authenticity trumps like-ability. Make sure that your new handle is used uniformly throughout your social media networks, that way you are creating a consistent brand that is searchable across all the available platforms.
2-   MAKE IT EASY FOR OTHERS TO CONNECT THROUGH CONSISTENT BRANDING: Register with ALL of the social media sites that you can. You want to CONNECT with people and grow your following across all the platforms. In a nutshell, you have to go where your followers are.
3-   REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME: In addition to plugging into social media sites, register your new handle as a domain name. I used GoDaddy.com, as they are an excellent and reliable domain registration site with an excellent reputation for providing consistent service.
4-   KODAK MOMENT: Dress your best and have your picture taken. This is so important. Have a current picture of you, so that your followers know what you look like. A high-resolution photo, showing you off, dressed to the nines will convey to your followers and network that you are a professional, that you care about your brand and that you are your brand. Look the part!!
5-   CONTENT DEVELOPMENT: Develop a content calendar and stick to it. Once you have devised a theme for your brand, start planning posts. My good friend and mentor Sebastian Rusk, Miami’s Official Creator of Buzz via SocialBuzzTV.com advised me to use HootSuite to deliver content across the multiple social platforms. This makes it easier to push one message and also allows you to plan your postings for specific times.
6-   Network, Connect and Interact: Once you have established the above, you have to start talking about it! Start with your inner circle, these folks will be your biggest supporters. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for a shout out. You simply cannot just connect with people and then try to sell them your widgets and/or services. Once you connect with people, it is so important to be REAL and CARE about your followers. Answer every questions and interact with them. People love to have a direct connection and the interaction. When a follower responds to your post or mentions you, interact with them, give them the value added benefit of you. ALSO, don’t be a wallflower, get out there and meet new friends and future clients in person.
7-  LIVE THE LIFE YOU HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED: You have to believe in yourself. This point cannot be understated. You can follow the blueprint above to the tee, but if you don’t believe that you are bringing value to your network, that you are leaving a mark, that what you do matters, YOU WILL FAIL! Don’t be afraid to reach out to your trusted friends, family, whoever and ask them for feedback.  It’s important to believe in yourself, but it is equally as important to vet your ideas.
